The Intelligence Can Be Rented

For most of the digital age, intelligence and memory have been bundled together.
The company that gives us the software often becomes the company that stores our work. The company that gives us the search engine learns what we search. The company that gives us the social network becomes the custodian of our relationships. And now, as artificial intelligence becomes the interface through which we increasingly think, write, design, research, and build, the same pattern is beginning to repeat: the intelligence provider is also becoming the keeper of the context that makes the intelligence useful.
But these two things do not have to belong together.
The intelligence can be rented. The memory can remain ours.
Imagine that a person has a Guava Nexus running on their own computer. It contains the things that make their intellectual life continuous: Seeds, Versions, decisions, evidence, documents, source files, relationships between ideas, and the history of how those ideas changed.
That Nexus is not merely a cache for some larger platform. It is the person's authoritative private record.
ChatGPT may read from it. Claude may read from it. Cursor may read from it. A model that does not yet exist may one day read from it.
None of them has to own it.
The model becomes replaceable.
The Nexus remains.
This changes the architecture of AI from something vertically integrated into something modular.
A cloud intelligence can be given only the context required for a particular task. A local model can sit beside the Nexus and reason over far more sensitive material without that context leaving the machine at all. The user can move from one intelligence to another without rebuilding years of context inside each provider's proprietary memory system.
The durable layer belongs to the human.
The intelligence is a service.
The distinction becomes even more important when the Nexus contains more than text.
Suppose a Seed eventually produces a PDF.
Or an image.
Or a dataset, audio recording, design file, source archive, research report, presentation, or some future format we have not yet invented.
When that artifact leaves the local Nexus, Guava could calculate its cryptographic fingerprint and associate it with provenance that already existed privately: who authored it, which Seed or Version it came from, what evidence informed it, what source relationships accompanied it, and what commitments existed when it was produced.
The file itself becomes verifiable.
Not because Guava owns the file, but because the Nexus can attest to its history.
The artifact might travel independently through email, websites, archives, peer-to-peer systems, or ordinary file sharing. Years later, someone could still determine whether the file they possess is the same artifact that was originally committed.
Its provenance would not need to depend on the application in which it was opened.
And the author would not need to make the complete private history public in order to establish that provenance.
The boundary could instead be deliberate:
private creation → local provenance → selective disclosure → public signature → optional anchoring
Inside the local Nexus, the full metadata may remain encrypted and private.
At publication, the author might reveal some metadata, commit cryptographically to other metadata, and retain the rest privately. The exact cryptographic mechanism remains a design problem, but the product principle is simpler:
An artifact should be able to carry proof of where it came from without requiring the owner's entire intellectual history to accompany it.

Publication would therefore be more than uploading a file.
It would be the moment when a private intellectual object begins participating in a shared record.
A wallet such as MetaMask could sign the public commitment, allowing others to verify that a particular address deliberately certified that artifact or Version.
And even this would remain separate from anchoring.
The Author certifies.
The Producer may later anchor.
The first establishes human commitment. The second establishes stronger public permanence and consensus.
Blockchain is no longer asked to store every thought or protect private information—tasks for which it is poorly suited.
Instead, each layer does something different.
The local machine protects privacy.
Cryptography protects integrity.
The Nexus preserves continuity.
MCP or another interface allows intelligence to retrieve authorized context.
The public network allows ideas and artifacts to be shared.
Wallet signatures establish public commitments.
Blockchain anchoring, when desired, establishes a stronger common record.
No single layer has to own everything.
This may also suggest two very different relationships between Guava and artificial intelligence.
The first is rented intelligence.
ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or another external model receives bounded context from the Nexus when the user asks it to do something. The model may temporarily see that context because inference requires it, but it does not need to possess the canonical private history from which that context came.
The second is resident intelligence.
A model runs locally beside the Nexus.
It knows the person's work because it has permission to read the local record. It can search years of Seeds, inspect Version histories, follow relationships between ideas, retrieve private documents, and help the user rediscover things they have forgotten—all without sending that private corpus to a remote inference service.
Such a model would not need to be the most powerful intelligence available.
That is precisely the point.
The local intelligence could handle continuity, retrieval, organization, reflection, and ordinary knowledge assistance. When a difficult problem requires substantially more intelligence, the Nexus could selectively bring in an external model.
The local model knows the person.
The rented model solves the difficult problem.
The Nexus mediates between them.
This could eventually become one of Guava's premium products: not a proprietary foundation model, but a private personal intelligence operating over a human-owned knowledge system.
The intelligence would still be replaceable.
The context would not be.
There is a deeper consequence to this architecture.
Today, the largest AI companies have strong incentives to accumulate context because context makes intelligence more useful. The better a system remembers us, the harder it becomes to leave it.
A sovereign Nexus changes that relationship.
The user's intellectual history can remain either in one of two places:
private, under their control,
or
public, because they deliberately chose to disclose it.
There does not have to be a third permanent category in which a corporation privately possesses the canonical record of a person's intellectual life simply because that corporation happens to provide the intelligence currently reading it.
That does not mean information never leaves the computer. Cloud intelligence necessarily receives whatever context the user sends for inference.
The distinction is more fundamental:
the AI provider does not need to become the permanent authority over the human's memory.
That authority can remain with the person.
And if the person eventually chooses to make something part of collective history, that commitment can move into the public Nexus where others can inspect, cite, grow from, verify, and perhaps anchor it.
Private memory and public history become different states of the same human intellectual process.
The machines between them may change constantly.
A person might use Claude today, ChatGPT tomorrow, a local model next year, and an intelligence we cannot yet imagine a decade from now.
The models will compete.
They will become cheaper, faster, and more capable.
They will be rented, replaced, upgraded, and abandoned.
But something should remain when they are gone.
The Nexus is the place to return to.
The intelligence can be rented.
The human record should not be.
