Version 01 · the body as written
For a moment, the symbolism was difficult to ignore. Paeng crossed Luzon, yet some of its deepest wounds were left in Bangsamoro. When Paeng disappeared from the national weather vocabulary, the name that eventually took its place was Pilandok—a word that also belongs to the trickster tradition of the Muslim south. Four years later, Pilandok returned not as a story but as a storm. It remained offshore, influencing Philippine weather without directly striking the country. Read symbolically, Pilandok did not arrive as an invader. He appeared at a distance. That is what makes warning feel more fitting than revenge. Of course, storms do not carry messages, and weather bureaus do not write allegories. Pilandok followed atmospheric pressure, not folklore. But human beings have always used stories to understand events larger than themselves, and sometimes history accidentally arranges facts into a shape that resembles a story. So what might Pilandok have been warning about? Not simply another typhoon. The Philippines already knows another storm will come. Perhaps the warning is about what happens when the center ignores the periphery. When flood-control exists more convincingly in budgets than on the ground. When people are repeatedly praised for resilience instead of institutions being held accountable. When the small figure survives by adaptation while the powerful continue behaving as if nothing needs to change. The warning was not that another storm was coming. The warning was that the same political weather might still be here.
